Beginnings

Make Today Your Masterpiece

Every morning that you are blessed with another day of life, I want you to say to yourself: “I am going to make today a masterpiece.”

When I had made my final decision that I was going to take on the challenge of going to Dental School in the Dominican Republic, I began to look at life through a different lens. As I looked at the calendar, I noticed that I had but months until I would be moving to a different country, a new home, a new school — ultimately, stepping into a “new life.” I was terrified, but yet so incredibly excited at the same time. It then got me thinking:  what I have now, I may not have ever again. So, each day I was blessed with, I took advantage of it, and made it my masterpiece.

So how do you make a day a masterpiece?

I decided to do my best to enjoy every little thing around me. I spent more time with the people I know will always be there for me and I for them. I made a list of the things I’d like to accomplish before I began my “new life” and worked bit by bit towards those goals everyday (such as launfullsizerender-1ching Pure As Gold). I would enjoy the busy roads I would take on my long drives up to school. I took on opportunities I never in a million years would’ve thought I’d take on. I would enjoy my daily routines a little bit more. I would enjoy my little visits to random cafes and indulge in that sip of coffee a little extra. I would enjoy the struggle of waiting my turn to use the squat rack at the gym. I would enjoy the sunny days just as much as I would enjoy the cold, rainy days. And I would appreciate the beauty and many blessings that surrounded me on a day-to-day basis — those that I feel I’ve always taken for granted. And as soon as I began to have that shift in perspective, that’s when my days were not just like any other ordinary day down in the calendar, but rather, extraordinary days that became my masterpiece.

Now because I had enjoyed these days that were given to me to the absolute fullest, I was able to step into my “new life” with the comfort of knowing I gave it my all.

I knew it was my time to step into something completely out of my comfort zone. My season back at home was over for the time being. I created some beautiful masterpieces but it was time to travel the world, bless those who are less fortunate, share my light, build a better, stronger, and wiser me, and become the doctor I had always dreamed of becoming. fullsizerender

I want you to think of your life this way.

Think of today as a microcosm, or a miniature version of your entire life. You are “born” when you wake up and you “die” when you go to sleep. If you lived your days as if this were true, how much differently would you live your life?

Life is not tomorrow or a week from now. Life is now, at this exact moment. Cause after all, you can’t make your past self nor your future self do anything. And the more we brainwash ourselves into thinking that we have all the time in the world to do what we want to do, the more we sleepwalk right past life’s most precious opportunities and simple beauties it may bring.

So let’s start off the year with the goal of creating an exquisite gallery filled with priceless works of art no one can ever take away from you.

“You can’t do anything about the length of your life, but you can do something about its width and depth.”
